After updating to the latest 0.8.103 version of pimatic I see the following error in the logs:
error [pimatic]: pimatic needs npm version 2, your version is 1.3.21, run "npm install -g npm@2".
Can I ignore this error or should I really update my version of npm?

Try to upgrade nodejs to 0.10.32 or higher, after this you can try to upgrade to npm2.
My Pimatic runs on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Server, I upgrade nodejs from 0.10.25 to 0.10.44. After this, the upgrade to npm 2 is finished without errors.
I hope, the links will help to fix the error.

The npm version check was introduced, because plugin installation does not work with npm 3. If the plugin installation works with npm 1, then there is no need for you to update to npm 2. The upcoming pimatic v0.9 release will only support node v4 anyway and we get rid of all the very old stuff.
I relaxed the check to check for a version less than 3 and changed the error into an warning.
