[Solved] DS1820 no dir in w1/devices

Hello
I’m brand new to pimatic, but I handeld ist to install

next step would be to include two ds1820.

wenn I use only the standard image : 2014-12-24-wheezy-raspbian.img
and use the 3step :

sudo modprobe wire
sudo modprobe w1-gpio
sudo modprobe w1-therm

I get the dirs in devices according to the hardwareid - everything is fine.

Wenn I install pimatic into this image and do the same thing,
there will be no dir generated according to the hardwareid.

ofcourse pimatic can’t read the sensors, althought I did the setup in config.json like in
https://www.npmjs.com/package/pimatic-ds18b20
described.

the dirs in /sys/bus/w1/devices are never made.

what could be wrong?

Some additional infoirmation

I cant make a directory in /sys/bus/w1/devices
not as user pi
not with sudo

with putty from my pi:

I had the same issue last week and thought i killed my PI. > Maybe not? :-o
Could there be another change in pimatic using the GPIO and disables the driver for 1W communication?

Because of that i switched it to pimatic-homeduino inputs, in my eyes also the better way because PI is very sensitive in electronics and arduino is faster for that work.

When I use a new image
e.g. 2014-12-24-wheezy-raspbian.img
steps:

write image to SD (using Win32DiskImager.exe)
sudo raspi-config
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

everything works fine
so the GPIO or the PI are not demaged!!

after following the steps

1.) wget http://nodejs.org/dist/v0.10.24/node-v0.10.24-linux-arm-pi.tar.gz -P /tmp
2.) cd /usr/local
3.) sudo tar xzvf /tmp/node-v0.10.24-linux-arm-pi.tar.gz --strip=1
4.) sudo apt-get install build-essential
5.) mkdir /home/pi/pimatic-app192
6.) cd /home/pi/
7.) npm install pimatic --prefix pimatic-app --production
8.) cd pimatic-app
9.) cp node_modules/pimatic/config_default.json config.json
10.) sudo nano /home/pi/pimatic-app/config.json (change password)
11.) sudo chmod 777 /home/pi/pimatic-app/
12.) sudo reboot
13.) cd ./pimatic-app/node_modules/pimatic
14.) sudo npm link
15.) wget https://raw.github.com/pimatic/pimatic/master/install/pimatic-init-d
16.) sudo cp pimatic-init-d /etc/init.d/pimatic
17.) sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/pimatic
18.) sudo chown root:root /etc/init.d/pimatic
19.) sudo update-rc.d pimatic defaults
sudo node_modules/pimatic/pimatic.js

pimatic works fine
BUT the sensors (modprobe) do not create the dirs. And it is not possible for me to make a dir in /sys/bus/w1/devices by my own.

having the same problem right now.
the dir /sys/bus/w1/devices doesn’t show anything, its empty.
maybe i did some wiring error, but i checked my wiring and did not discover any shortages or some other failure that far. tried with several ds18 b20 sensors without any success.

any ideas ?

the w1 kernel modules are loaded

i even tried with 2 pi’s. the new pi2 and the piB, tried different wiring schemes, different breadboards.
now this is far beyond me!

hm… tried an older copy of pimatic with wheezy 7.6 and it works ! the sensor appears in the devices directory.
i’m getting nuts …
what does the new wheezy 7.8 do different then 7.6 ?
will try to install a 7.6 from scratch to see if it’s the distribution or another issue.

as i supposed! raspbian wheezy 7.6 has no issues with the ds18b20 temp sensors.
i installed it from scratch, first thing i did after setting up the system was installing wire, w1_w1therm and w1_gpio. after that, all 5 ds18 sensors immediately showed up in the devices directory. well, i knew there was no wiring error

but … after an apt-get upgrade i went from 7.6 to 7.8 and the devices are gone now!
maybe there’s a simple workaround for 7.8, but that’s beyond my linux knowledge.

i will setup the system with wheezy 7.6 and won’t do any upgrade unless anybody has a clue whats up with this behavior …

the device-tree feature seems to issue trouble with existing hardware devices.
you can disable the device tree at all, when you add device_tree= to the config.txt (located at /boot). but i don’t know if this will have any disadvantages regarding the stability of the operation system.

so if you only want to use the ds18b20 temp sensor with the new Raspbian Wheezy 7.8, just enter the following line to your config.txt and reboot, this should do the trick : dtoverlay=w1-gpio,gpiopin=4

No answer from my side because I switched over to homeduino for all sensors complete, so I don’t need the W1 at my Pi now anymore.
For me its a beter solution to have it all attached to the Arduino and keep the PI for Automation and presenting the Webpage exclusive.

no problem ! finally the issue was found
for this particular case i do not need an arduino / homeduino.
this pi shall only survey a floor heating supply.

Yes the problem is the kernelupdate to from 3.12 to 3.18 by wheezy-raspbian.
A short solving is as you described.

Just for reference:
There is also a solution for missing contact to SPI or I2C devices used via python for example after the update.
My friend made a small explanation about it but in german (maybe it can help someone)

sudo nano /boot/config.txt

and add

dtoverlay=w1-gpio,gpiopin=<x>

(where <x> and <y> are GPIO pins, obviously).

after resolving the one wire I ran into GPIO problems so I downgraded

I reverted back to the old firmware

 sudo rpi-update f74b92120e0d469fc5c2dc85b2b5718d877e1cbb

No more problems
