Tradfri bulbs connect without remote

Hi,
bought yesterday some Ikea bulbs and a hub, but no remote. In the manual is written, that it is not possible to connect bulbs without a remote, dimmer or pir… That’s not correct!

I made it this way and it works:

• Put the bulb near to the hub (max 1m away)
• power on the hub and wait until the third LED starts to flash
• power the bump

After some seconds the LED went from flashing into steady on. Now you can find the device in the Tradfri app and by Device discovering from pimatic.

I was as well able to connect a bulb without powering the hub off by pressing the connect button for some seconds (~3 sec) and powering the bulb in the next step, but this works not every time. The above described variante works always.

Damn! I went to IKEA a second time just two buy the remote! But thanks for the info!

but nice to see that it is not needed. will keep that in mind.

Sorry guys, this method didn’t work for me.

I have a brand new bridge that I’m trying to pair some GU10s to without a steering (switch or dimmer) device.

I don’t think my bridge config will go any further unless I add a switch first (which I don’t have). Tried the power on trick mention by OP but my 3rd light just keeps blinking, despite having bulb right next to it.

Last week I bought some more lights and I was still able to add them without a remote. Did you wait until the 3rd LED starts to blink. Just after this short time you should power on the LED. The connection now can take some seconds.

@ortin Just a thought, have you ever paired a remote with your bridge, perhaps during the initial registration?

I’m wondering if you’ve got to get past the initial hurdle of configuring the bridge with a remote before doing anything else.

Till now I haven’t paired a remote with my bridge.

Hmm, I’ll try again then, though I did give it four goes before giving up.

I definitely was waiting till the 3rd led started blinking (tried as soon as it started, a few seconds after, etc), and I left it a good 5 mins during one go. It just never stopped blinking. My Ikea app on iOS was also refusing to go any further until I had paired a steering device.

A friend is picking up a remote from Ikea this weekend that I can at least fall back to if it still doesn’t work.

At the moment the firmware of the TRADFRI for iOS is very buggy. To add remotes and lamps you have to do the following steps:

1. Try to discover the remote with the TRAFRI iOS App and hold the pair button of the remote for 10s until the 3rd LED on the Gateway flashes four times. The iOS App won’t show the remote.

2. Close the TRADFRI App

3. Disconnect the Gateway from the power supply

4. Wait 5 seconds and reconnect the power supply

5. Resart the iOS App. Now you will have a unknown device in your list

6. Select “Discover LED lamp” in the app and switch the lamp on

7. Press and the pair button on the remote and locate the remote next to the lamp (distance 2 - 5 cm)

8. The TRADFRI App will find the lamp

9. Be happy
