@Michael-Rudek by speaking English you talk to a wider group of people and thus resulting in faster problem solving. If we are going to make threads where it starts in English, to German, to Dutch and then Chinese, it would be hard for people to know what exactly is going on. This is why there is a German section. I would like to recommend to throw your question through a translate app and post that under the German words, this way, anyone speaking English that can fix your problem, can respond too. I believe that was kinda what @leader21 wanted to achive with this new sub forum…

Using a DIY smart home system I imagine people need to look into other technical topics as well… Most of documentation, blogs and forums are in English. So I guess it is wise to speak at least a little bit of English (in general!)
I as a German don’t like this sub section, which will lead to all questions into one sub and split the community even more.

But I guess people asking for a German sub forum is just a very German thing to do - Why go the extra mile if you are “the majority of people” as @noxx puts it…

I am confident people can use Google Translate to understand mostly everything and use it to ask further questions or ask one of their fellow Germans to translate / help further. If the language keeps you from doing something, maybe other missing skills will, too?

Let’s see how this works out. I will keep writing everything in english as I also search/google for anything in english first as most literature/activity in this area is english.

I have respect for everybody getting into DIY electronics/software without solid knowledge of english as it must be very difficult. I can only suggest to use something like google translate or online courses like duolingo to learn english as it opens a whole new world of information.

As far as I can see most of the questions asked in the German category could have easily been asked in the english languange. Maybe with a little bit of effort. For me it is no problem reading them, but it will make searching within the forum very difficult. So I would say take some effort, translate into english and if you can not find the right word or sentence write it in German. Maybe we should start a Dutch section as well, as many users are Dutch…

So now we see automatically the point why the Dutch are better (besides footbal) than the German…

@dynamite We should not want anymore sub forums. Dutch people can manage English, also the technical questions. We(Dutch) are mostly raised around English movies, music etc. This cant be said for the Germans. As @leader21 is imo a good moderator, we should not be concerned as to where this leads. I cant imagine that this great community would go full-German, so dont worry, beeeee happy

So after 4 months I noticed more and more German topics when I click on the unread button.

At first I actually tried to understand the questions and even used google to see what a topic was about but I don’t anymore.
I still feel if someone wants help he/she could make some effort and post in English.
I am still afraid knowledge is getting lost this way.

What’s everyone’s thought about this?

I agree, more and more German topics that are getting more technical. Even a perfectly fine English topic was switched to German: https://forum.pimatic.org/topic/3323/apply-string-expressions

In my opinion a lot of tips, info and solutions are not reaching everyone because it’s all in German. And to be complete honest : I refuse to read any German topic. I simply do not master German enough to understand a technical German topic.

I totally agree with @koffienl and @incmve ! Both contribute a lot and other users should make it easy for them to help / give support (they don’t get paid or anything, so make a little effort to help those that will help you )

@all German Users, please use https://www.deepl.com/translator . It’s the best translator currently available! Google Translator is not a good option, I agree. @leader21 Maybe make this sticky, so people can use the translator to ask their questions / understand the answers.

I also have the feeling that the community around Pimatic is falling asleep. I have also started to deal with other systems, but like you didn’t want to do anything new.

I have the same experiences with ESPEasy, although I can live with the MQTT protocol - for now.

I am looking around MySensors - this also works well after some initial difficulties. That here no German was spoken here was also quite obstructive for me, I can “pretty good” English, but I have difficulties to get to the point…

The forum here will hopefully make this all the easier in the future. I also hope that Pimatic will continue and the developers won’t jump off - the system runs stable and has few to no errors.

for me iam in test phase and testing fhem / pimatic / node-red / mervis

but pimatic is my favorit but iam not use standard hardware so iam running in many test or not working.
my test hardware are unipi s103-g , xs50 , s103 , unipi v1.1 / busware cul usb stick 433 + 868 mhz many sensors db and unica und analog pressur sensors , digital contact sensors für doors.

the goal is to use automation in a my office and a big house and see all temp/ligth/doors open sensors whit alarm over sms or call over fritzbox.

but simples thinks like busware cul or fritzbox callmonitor gsm-modem running in many work.

erst mal gut zu wissen das es ne brauchbare url für die übersetzung gibt bei manchen wörtern in englich hab selbst ich problem ( kein bussiness/technik englisch gelernt ). ich bin selber nen bastler mit viel spielzeug aber renne oft schnell in nicht lösbare probleme man kann zwar vieles umgehen aber für mich selber ist es nicht der richtige weg lieber wäre wie vielen bestimmt ne eierlegende wohlmilchsau

natürlich ist es auch gut ein deutsches unterforum zu haben aber da ist die response von vielen halt nicht möglich es sei den man postet seine probleme zweisprachig aber ich denk mir auch mal wenn man wirklich ein problem hat wäre es keine arbeit den translater anzuwerfen nur löst google translate bei vielen meiner freunde manchmal verwunderung bis zu “ich versteh nicht was du meinst aus”

Mit dem floorplan wäre nice aber für mich kein muss ich mag eher simple einfach zu erkennen was man schalten will bin halt <fun>alt und riech nach pippi ;D</fun>

first of all it’s good to know that there is a useful url for the translation of some words in english, even I have problems (no bussiness/technique learnt english). I am a craftsman with lots of toys but often run into unsolvable problems fast one can deal with a lot of things but for me it is not the right way would be better as many would certainly be curious curious well milk sow; D

of course, it’s also good to have a german subforum, but since the response of many people is not possible it’s possible to post their problems bilingual but I think if you really have a problem it wouldn’t be any work to start the translater only cause google translate to many of my friends sometimes wondering up to “I don’t understand what you mean”.

With the floorplan it would be nice but for me no one has to like I rather simple easy to recognize what you want to switch is <fun>old and smells like pippi; D</fun>

And the worse thing is, that this language thing is now spreading and a lot of Chinese discussions are started. Where does this end?

the chinese stuff is all spam, so there’s no complain about that instead of that it’s spam
we will delete all spam users and block their ip range. therefore we do not need to discuss about chinese spam crap.

i understand you worries about the german forum and the language twists.

@leader21 could you maybe discuss a auto translate option? I worry a bit about the fact that they should speak English if they can, and most just keep posting in German, while the most of them already posted many times in English… This disturbs me a bit. Either the rules arnt clear, or there should be a translating option integrated in this forum. I kinda start ignoring German threads because i dont know the language but i also want to help where possible, i think that should be made available.

Unfortunately, there is nothing like auto-translate plugin for nodeBB. I share most of your concerns. In particular, I am amazed about the growing number of redundant questions. I also notice some users started topics in German who posted in English earlier which is a sign of laziness in my opinion and not very polite.

We are planning to set-up a notice shortly with a few guidelines on using the German category.

we place importance on a fair and cooperative relationship between our users.
still the forum guidelines are clear and mandatory for everyone who uses our service here. there is said on no. 7 : the forum language is english.
the german help category has been created for users who do not speak english at all. as marcus said, we’re up to it and come back with news shortly!

Agree.
There are 3 participants in this topic (apart from you) : cherberg, WaJoWi and mwittig. All three more than capable of perfect English.
It is, as far as I can tell, a detailed technical topic where others could benefit from.
I am the second person to point out to post in English in that topic, and I get the answer that “all referred to articles are written in German”. Point is, 80% of the posted links are after someone asked to switch to English.

@koffienl @incmve I see your point and I must admit I haven’t thought carefully enough about this when I started to write the response. I am sorry about this.

As the German Support category is continuously causing perturbations I think further action is required on the matter.
I’ll discuss the matter with @leader21 asap

Generally I see one the following ways forward

• Close the German forum
• Let users vote on the matter
• Leave it as is
• Apply and enforce a stricter policy

For the time being I’ll disable creating new topics on that category

@mwittig No need to say sorry, it’s just a healthy discussion
I don’t want to close it, it can be useful for people needing help and don’t understand English.
Maybe a stricter policy is the way to go, or make the German forum read only so people have to post in the English forum.
When someone is having difficulty an admin/mod can always transfer the topic to the German part and maybe translate the solution to English? Just some idea’s.
