I think making a static reservation in yout DHCP/router is a lot easier and safer.
All my ESP’s have a static IP in my router (and a own FQDN on my domain name).

As far as I know not all routers can do this. I believe mine can’t.

@demlak , i’m using a Ubee EVW3226 ipv6 modem with wlan from UPC without a option for StaticIP. the possibility would be very useful for me

Not sure if it would fit on a ESP01. How much flash size do you have and what settings did you use for the board (program space vs SPIFFS).

I did see some optimisation in extracting common code into one (or a few) .js file(s). That would make the code slightly harder to read, but it would reduce the kilobytes by approximately 40-50%

Interesting Can you show some code?

At this moment I’m testing with a few other options:

• Putting JS and CSS in seperate JS and CSS subfolders
• Compress every webfile with .gz
• Setting a max-age for static JS and CSS files for the client so it doesn’t download

I was thinking to strip the entire navbar from HTML and let it receive through jquery. Would make the HTML smaller and I don’t have to edit every single HTML when there is a change in the navbar.

@Heizelmann As such it is not relevant whether your router supports assigning fixed ip-addresses (or reserved as they are sometimes called) to certain MAC-addresses. All routers only use a small part of the ip range as to only allow up to 50 (or so) ip-addresses. The theoretical value of 255-2 would completely kill your wlan. So if your router assigns addresses from xxx.yyy.zzz.100 - xxx.yyy.zzz.150, you simply assign your other devices (printer, server(s), espimatic) a fixed ip-address somewhere in the open ranges. Use the correct network mask and everything functions correctly.

Please don’t. gunzipping files in memeory will even require more memory, be it not on the spiffs unless you also require temporary space to gunzip.

That’s exactly what I did but without jquery. Just plain javascript to keep it simpler and more compatible.

From compressed SPIFFS with a max-age setting so the browser doesn’t re-download the unchanged file.
I don’t see very much memory consumption compared with a version that doesn’t use gzip.

Ok. Then that would even be a better improvement.

After unzipping and double-clicking the root.html it should already work. It can be that if you use internet explorer or Chrome they might warn you for unsafe content. A javascript loaded from your fle system could be an attack of course.

The entire style in the top of each html could be extracted as well, just like a lot of common javascript in the htmls that only need to be separated from the “device” specific code which can stay in the html. And even there it could be smaller by calling the javascript with the device as variable.

Just played with bootstrap on the SPIFFS. Problem is the filenames of the fonts. They exceed the limit of 32 characters for entire filename. I would have to change all the references in the CSS file to other filenames. Not sure if I want to go that way.

OK, playing further with bootstrap an djquery local or not.
What I have made up so far:

• Change glyphicon path in bootstrap CSS
• Put all the bootstrap and jquery CSS/JS files on SPIFFS (preferable as gzip)
• Put all the bootstrap fonts on SPIFFS
• Make an option in the ESPimatic config where you can choose if you want all the bootstrap to run local or not
• Include a JS that will insert JS and CSS into the current page. Depending on the previous setting it will reutrn different file with local path or URL.

To be honest : when all the stuff is allready in the browser cache both are evenly fast. But storing all the JS/CSS/fonts on the SPIFFS is taking a lot of space. I definitely want to keep option to load all the stuff from the internet.

whatabout an extra plugin on pimatic to hold the css, js and so on in the local network…
typicaly a client that wants to reach espimatic is also able to reach pimatic… so we can have a solution where files are accassable without internet but not on the esp module…

also we should remember/think off, that accessing the ESPimatic webinterface is typicaly only on installation and initial config… typicaly we don’t get there anymore… so speeding up the access would ne nice… but is not that important as the possibility of a total offline access…

and btw… this thread is going very confused… i would prefer the github issues to get different threads on different questions/topics… to structure everything…

For now I have the followoing solution: By default all the bootstrap/jquery is loaded from internet. You can do a setting in the GUI to set to use these files from local. When that option is enabled, it will load the files from SPIFFS. That, in combination with gzip and force caching should make the GUI still fast responsive.

Hosting on pimatic could be an option, but for now I don’t want to go that road.
Thinking about a better way for issues about ESPimatic in this thread or github.

so… you first need GUI-relevant files loaded from the internet to see the option for not loading them from the internet?

Correct
It was designed to be a full GUI with bootstrap/jquery from internet. Disabling that is an extra option, not a default setting

that’s bad… because this means: no way to use in an offline environment

Sorry, it was never intend to be offline. With this new option you can upload all the bootstrap/jqeury files to SPIFFS and let it be offline from that moment.
PErhaps later I will make a light design, but for now I want to focus on features.

If you like you can create your own HTML. Just take a look on the handle_xxx_ajax functions in the code, each function does the sending and receiving of the settings for that type.
for example : you can get all the settings for DS18B20 by requesting /ds18b20_ajax and after that, POST or GET the new values to /ds18b20_ajax
