It would be nice to have a Dimmer device type with a flexible range and step size for the dimlevel which can be used as a basis for custom device implementations.
For example, this will be useful for an Arduino PWM output device which has an 8-bit resolution (0…255).

I am surpised to see about 70 users viewed this request, but apparently do not see a need for this feature. So let me give you some examples:
-
Control the volume of you AVR in more fine grained steps. Believe me if you ever tried to do that, the 20 steps the current slider provides are not enough to set the right volume. The Denon AVR supports absolute volume control with 100 steps.
-
Control an 8-bit PWM output. For this you need 256 steps. This can be used for example, to control the speed of a motor or the brightness of a LED.
I think the feature is relatively easy to implement for a frontend developer and it should be possible to do that in a backwards compatible fashion.
