Google Maps API becoming a paid service

I haven’t spent the time to read this throughoutly, but it seems there will be a lot less requests for free.

Definitely something to consider if you use a location API that updates once a minute (1440 requests per day), or near that.

I use pimatic-location plugin, which does use Google location API.

@kitsunen Thanks for pointing this out. Doesn’t the $200 free monthly usage for private users covers this if you keep well below 100.000 calls per month? Even if you exceed that you won’t be pushed into debt right away.

100.000 calls per month / 30d / 24h /60m = 2.3 calls per minute (3333 calls per day).

I think you are correct.
Although setting up billing info is mandatory to continue using based on the $200 free credit. Google sent an email to existing API key users (I received it last night). It includes an estimate whether you are above the watermark, below an excerpt:

Hi,
Today we are announcing important changes, including our new name - Google Maps Platform, a simplified product structure, pay as you go pricing for all, and more.
<…>
How does this affect your current projects?
Project: My Project (627xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
Based on your project usage over the last 3 months and our new pricing plan, we estimate that your new cost will be less than $200 a month and will be covered by our $200 monthly free credit. This estimate does not include usage from other projects or keyless implementations.

That’s also my understanding and what I said. If you keep below the 100.000 calls per month which should be more than enough given that it is it is only about using pimatic-location one should not exceed the free $200 budget.
