MiLight recommendations?

Hi guys,
i want to replace all our home lights with wifi based lights. Philips HUE is waaay too expensive so i have seen some people using milight. I would like to ask for recommendations on this product, what i exactly need.

I want to replace 10+ e27 bulbs, a couple of e14 bulbs and some hallogeen(is that even spelled correctly?) spots.

Any links and info will be greatly appreciated!

i am using milight led stripes, no bulbs.
one thing you need to consider is that you can only use four bulbs on one gateway. so you need more gateways (as far as i am into the matter).
i am also using two ikea tradfri bulbs. they are working fine here. there should be also rgb bulbs available recently. also there are spots available.

@leader21 do you know why there is a 4 device limit? Anyway around it? Having to use 4/5 gateways wouldnt be a problem though

Does the gateway maintain a static ip?

If i buy the Milight iBox2 and a warm white e27 bulb, im ready set go or do i need something else?

You can use this DIY-gateway instead the miilight wlan gateway. It emulates a gateway with unlimited groups. A normal gateway supports only four groups.
But i use it only with one RGBW stripe. I have no experience with such a big environment.
A alternative for hue are also the ikea bulbs.

After reading some doc’s i know now why it is only 4 channels.

Ill order some stuff tomorrow and go from there

@leader21 Well, it is nothing spectaculair but the 15 buttons on the remote are all hard coded in the gateway. One could say this is improper coding but meh.

You could use more than four bulbs per gateway.
You could only define four groups per gateway. Each group can consist as many milight devices as you want.

I have four RGB stripes with a V4 bridge in use.
I also own a V6 bridge with a group of E14 and a group of E27 bulbs.

Yes, the bridges support static IPs and could also be used as AccessPoint.

Possibly, slightly off-topic: Current makes of the iBox2 wifi controller support an 8-channel remote which I am currently integrating.

I am not yet sure whether or not it is tied to the iBox2 controller per se or it is matter of firmware version installed on the ibox controller. My wild guess is the latter applies and thus newer makes of the ibox1 controller might work as well. Mine does not work (possible because it does not has the right firmware version). Unfortunately, the vendor does not seem to support firmware updates.

Another curiosity is the 8-channel remote uses an unique command set even though the commands seem to be same as the 4-channel remote for full-color.

Well that’s slightly misleading. It is possible to have at least 10 bulbs paired per channel. But switching is only possible per channel.
