Esp8266 as an ir transmitter questions
Hey!
I currently have the situation that i want to control my airco unit through infrared.
I have pimatic in a room upstairs and i am amazed how well the coverage is so i dont want to move it to another room.
So it got me thinking… Could we use an esp as a wifi infrared device? And can it run on battery’s?
If anyone has this working, would you be so kind to post a tutorial?
I dont kniw anything of esp but with some guidance ill manage it

ESPimatic can send IR. You can put the IR string in a pimatic variable and with a rule you can send the IR string to ESPimatic.

esp on batteries is somehow difficult
but you only need a 5v psu so this shoukd be of no problem.
if you just need some ir commands to be sent i agree to koffienl. espimatic should serve you well, as far as you have the ir code available.
if not, you first need to capture these with lirc / irrecord or similar tools.

yes, you can, the esp12 has 4MB flash.
but as said - you won’t have a long runtime on batteries, if the esp is always on.
you need to deepsleep it but then you are not able to send your ir commands whenever you need it.
why do you need to run it on batteries?

@leader21 well… The airco is upstairs in another room. I dont like to have cables everywhere and i dont see any other option then wireless. Indeed it needs to stay awake all day so maybe ill have to look towards another option. Anything on the power grid is useless cause i have 1 power socket but that one is for the ac.
If you can programm arduino one option would be an ESP with deep sleep which only wakes up once every 10 minutes and then makes a request to pimatic and checks if it should turn on. Sure there is up to a 10 minute delay but this might not matter if the AC will be automated and the batteries would last longer. (Combined with a Li-Ion powerbank this could last quite some time)
An option for supplying power is USB. Today most people have devices in every room which have an USB port (TV/Stereo/PC/Receiver/Router/Accespoint) If this is the case for your room you could go without an additional powersupply and could “hide” the ESP behind/within the device which provides USB power.

for my project i use a leftover ESP-Relais-PCB. first i`ve tried to use them with battery too but with 2AA batteries it will be max. avilable for~24 hours.
with my paralell ESP-Plant-Moisture Sensor-project the result was clear for me - a ESP8266 and standby on batteries was a no-go… i’ve reached a maximal battery lifetime of about 7 days (all my AA-batteries was empty after short time so in the meantime I switched to a 5V battery pack for testing, sorry@varta ^^)
to read out the ir-codes of my remote i use a ir-receiving-module on my arduino uno (a receiving-IR-led with an resistor should work too) with the example “IRrecvDemo” on https://github.com/markszabo/IRremoteESP8266

and to control them via pimatic i use rules like

Funny thing is that every RAW code i try, is not working.
Ive tested with my samsung tv and this raw code doesnt work:

Non the less i can get my tv to turn on/off with the hex value. However, my AC is not recognized. Ive tried to increase the buffer but i get a crash while retreiving the raw code.
The hex code’s stay the same for every button i press.
Brand of my AC is Einhell, but gets recognized as Panasonic. Cant compile scetch with sendPANASONIC, but sendSAMSUNG works ok.

I am by no means an expert on infrared but it seems logical to me that if my sammy remote gives different code’s for every button, my AC should too.
Ive read somewhere that Raw (100): equals the fixed buffer from IRremoteESP8266.h and that i should increase it. This results in following messages

ah, it seems the IR is too long indeed. I’ve used another scetch and received the correct RAW code to turn it on. This code does not turn it off. But hey, its a start.

@koffienl Would you mind to explain as to why these raw code’s are longer?
If i might take a guess, is it because it sends multiple lines of information?
Because i recorded “16 degrees” and “fan speed 1”. However, since i recorded “16 degrees” @ speed 2, it keeps sending “16 degrees @ speed 2” instead of staying at speed 1.
Is that correct? If so, is there a work around to use every button code independently?
Anyway, i managed to turn it on and off, so if i have to keep fixed temp, it isnt a problem.
Most remotes for AC’s send the entire set of information, not just ON or OFF but also fanspeed, temperature and mode (heat, cool, etc).
I can’t remember the exact setting for my Einhell, but it switches the AC to on and cool. No clue what temperature

I just registered to this forum to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your codes, I spent the whole afternoon yesterday trying to send IR signals to my A/C to turn it off/on using the nodemcu esp8266 with an IR led connected to GPIO pin and none of the codes that I was sending (previously recorded with an IR receiver were working…) until I found your long string and that made it

Hello,
I would like to turn on my radio and samsung tv with ir and espimatic. I use espimatic for temp and relays and works very nice. Its great work. But now i have tried to use to send ir code to the tv but from pimatic i cannot getting the hole raw code to my receiver on a arduino uno. I use a rule and sending a raw code from a variable:

When i send the code with pimatic i receive strange little codes on my uno with a receiver. I think someting is going wrong from pimatic to the esp8266. Maybe someone knows what the problem is.

@ghv your variable is wrong. Remove the “{” at the beginning and the “}” at the end. Also remove every space inbetween the pulses.
So example;
412,234,567,891,012,283
Quick tip, open with wordpad, ctrl h, search for space, leave replace with empty, replace all.
Thanks for help and reply. I changed the variable but after that I had stil not a good code. I have tried man things and it cost me a lot of time. I have ordered 3 esp8266 so I took another esp8266. With the other one it works. Its not a strong signal but it sends the right code. I have read that the esp8266 not realy like to send ir. But for me its now working and getting every thing on the places and in pimatic. Great and thanks.
