Raspberry Pi 3 with Wifi+BLE

Hey guys,
just read that a new raspberry pi is on its way and wanted to share it with all of you.

Rumours say it got Wifi, Bluetooth 4.1 and and 1,2 GHz ARMv8 CPU.

NB, the power draw is slightly higher than with Raspi 2. A 2,5A power supply is recommended.

Hey guys! As I have pi 2 i am interested to know if the pi 3 has much more performance advantages.

Sure the wifi and bluetooth is o board, usb and ethernet is also the same, that’s not the question. Ram and CPU is similar. so does the upgrade from pi2 to pi3 pay off?
Ok the pi 3 has 64 bit architecture I just see. But does it really matter?

@leader21 There is a little difference if you hold a timer in your hand, but its not noticeable.

64bit is not used because there are no image’s that take advantage of this.

Thx for your fast answer. Regarding the software / images I already thought of something like that.
For pimatic it’s not the question of performance. It’s running really good on pi2 and even on pi1 it’s ok.

i think the advantages of the 64bit architecture will need some time till there will be a suitable rasbian version. But other small Boards with the same CPU does have better benchmarks the the pi2.
So when you buy a new PI i think its worth to buy a pi3 or if you need wifi and blue on board
About the WIFI i can’t say anything. My Pi3 is placed directly to my router and connected with RJ45

Agree. I am not sure, however, there will be 64-bit version of Raspbian soon. Has this been announced? I haven’t seen this yet, but a lot of discussion on that topic, e.g. https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=138385 and http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/43921/raspbian-moving-to-64-bit-mode. For the time being, alternative distributions may provide 64-bit support.

My previous one was an Raspberry B if you compare it with that one, the Raspberry Pi 3 certainly is a lot faster. simply starting pimatic is shortened by half the time it used to take on the B. also showing the graphs is a lot faster.

Yes from the pi 1 to the 2/3 is a big upgrade. Single core vs quad

Also have bought two RPI3 in Germany 40€ each + shipping from reichelt. I don’t have a pimatic setup running on one of them yet.
I have tried out Ubuntu Mate on one of them and it really is running great! Maybe it is worth a try running pimatic in the Mate environment as it already is 64 bit optimized in many packages if I’m not mistaken.

My pimatic setup is still running on a PI1 as it is working like it is and quite reliable, never change running system . But I’m quite sure I will upgrade to a pi3 within the next half a year or so.

I just installed the latest Raspian Jessie on my new Raspberry Pi 3 and it is a little faster than the Pi 2. I’m really hoping to get Pimatic running on the Pi 3. I just discovered Pimatic recently - it is awesome and an excellent replacement for my current green house logger/server. So any advice in that direction will be greatly appreciated.

Actually there is there is nothing special in running pimatic on raspbian Jessie. Just install nodeJS 0.10.24 and the start with the pimatic installation.
I have it running on a pi3 and did exactly what is meant the the installation guide on pimatic.org

welcome to pimatic if you need any help check out our howto section and / or post your questions on the board in a fitting category (to avoid hijacking threads).
there are many possibilities with pimatic and I can imagine that running it with a greenhouse is an interesting project!
then have fun with pimatic!

Sounds very interesting to me and I am curious to learn more about it. I am planning to build a simple green house for a start (just automated watering) and hope I can build a Personal Food Computer one day It is probalbly not too far fetched as the OpenAg team at MIT is working on a toolkit suitable for DIY.
