pimatic-denon-avr

Pimatic plugin to monitor & control a Denon AV Receiver over a network connection.

Status of Implementation

The feature set so far:

• presence sensor for the power status which also provides information about the master volume and selected input source
• power switch to switch the AVR on or off (standby)
• mute switch to mute and unmute the master volume
• master volume control
• input selector
• support for controlling multiple zones
• auto-discovery for upcoming pimatic v0.9
• new: HTTP transport as an alternative to using telnet for recent AVR models

Additional features can be added easily and I am happy to do this on demand. I have tested the plugin thoroughly with Denon AVR 1200w. If you’re going to test it with other receivers please let me know about your findings. Contributions to the project are welcome. You can simply fork the project and create a pull request with your contribution to start with.

WOW!!! very nice!! thx a lot for that plugin and your efforts!
at the current stage of development the combination of the plugin and my script set is a good base for a nice remote control. (at least for the api controlled avr)

As you also use telnet for communication with your receiver we could maybe merge our plugins or develop a frontend used for your and my receiver plugin.

I think the features provided by Denon and Pioneer AVRs won’t differ that much, so we could merge our plugins probably. Also the “problem” of finding comaintainers could be solved in this way

An additional benefit would be, that I have to arrange myself with coffeescript

The best solution would be a an interface, which have to be implemented by both devices. And the frontend only talks to the methods, defined by the interface afterwards.

@SaxnPaule That’s a great idea! I had breif look at the protocol description for the VSX-1120 and I believe the command set is similar, eventhough the command verbs and parameters slightly differ. Possibly, we can handle this with a thin abstraction layer which maps between specific elements and abstract command names & parameters. As far as I can see, this is what you already have done as part of your plugin implementation. So, we can follow that.

May we can find another developer with a Yamaha receiver to join the project. Would be nice to have one plugin being able to drive all these receiver brands Sony owners are also welcome, but I am not sure what can be done for that.

Could you please have a look into the supported commands section of my plugin: https://github.com/saxn-paule/pimatic-pio-remote#supported-commands and map these commands to the Denon control set if possible?

If that is done, I could add a new version of my plugin which takes a “brand” parameter with the possible values [pioneer|denon]. Afterwards you could test this version.

Yesterday I improved my plugin to avoid errors on lost connections. Now it doesn’t care if a connection is established or not. When the connection is up again, it continues working.

I don’t know how far you are with your plugin and what is implemented yet. Maybe you could take some time and translate my plugin to coffeescript or merge additional features from my plugin to yours that we only continue one of both.

If I’ll see some of my own code translated to CS I’ll probably better understand CS. I already understood declarations, functions and loops but when it comes to callbacks, promises etc. I’m totally out.

In addition, there are some spots in my code, that are not that optimal. With a better understanding of promises they could be done much better.

Re CS, I found http://coffeescript.org/ very useful in the beginning as it shows CS versus its JS constituents. You can also program pretty much JS code cofeescript. What I found most disturbing in the beginning is the fact that CS code is position dependent (what a stupid fashion, but that is required to get rid of block symbols and so on). So, you always need to make sure to get the indentation right (2 spaces per level). If you use an IDE like IDEA, WebStorm or alike it also very easy to get a preview of the JS compiled code.

Do you already had the chance to test the plugin with your AVR? I added a seperate denonHandler for customized command handling / response parsing and added a command section for denon in the commands.json.

No, not yet, but I had a look at your code and wanted to take over the command abstraction. I’ll certainly look into this adfter Xmas.

Having the same issue if zone 2 is turned off. It then will turn on zone two and thus shortly interrupt HDMI signal and stop playback.

Thank you for your feedback. Does this only happen when switching zone 2 via the web interface or does it also happen if you use the buttons/dials of the receiver?

If I switch on Zone 2 via the buttons the picture will also be interupted.

However when Zone 2 is switched off and I turn the volume knob it doesn’t get switched on.
If I Increase volume via pimatic (Main Volume) the receiver will turn on zone 2 and thus interrupt the picture.

Could it have something to do with CEC configuration?

Could you try if the issue occurs with the pio-remote plugin too?
Volume change is already implemented for Denon.
