RASPBERRY PI ZERO: THE $5 COMPUTER
-
In my search to get the size of my Pimatic system smaller, using the Zero, I stumbled upon this interesting posted. It explains how one could expand the zero with four USB ports without using the OTG or Power micro USB ports on the zero itself. Maybe, just maybe, I’m going to give this a try myself.
Might be interesting for anyone getting a Zero, sooner or later.

well, personally i like the idea for integrating raspberrys with c-rail mounting into electronic cabinets. i have two regular pi b running at the basement in my house electrics.
the price of 37 euro is surely ok for that kind of product.
but when i compare i would rather go for a pi2 with an enclosure than the pi zero and this solution. the needed space is nearly the same and the costs are equal in my opinion.
what makes it interesting is the proto board for own developing.
another thing is that the pi zero is sold out almost everywhere at the moment. this makes it hard to sell actually.pimatic v0.9 has been released!

I basically agree with what @leader21 is saying.
If the price tag stays as is (assuming 37 Euros) and the pricing for Zero doesn’t drop (~15 Euros in Germany at the moment) it’ll be tough competion given that a DIN rail enclosure for Raspi B & 2 is already available for about 10 Euros! To make it a good deal I think the price need to get down to 25 Euros, honestly!
A comparison with German street prices:
- Raspi Zero: 15 Euro plus enclosure with hub (37 Euros) = 52 Euros
- Raspi B+ (27,90) plus DIN rail enclosure (10,90) = 38,80 (both items from Reichelt - see below)

EDIT: To be fair, I should have taken the prototyping feature into account. A prototyping board for Raspberry like the one from Adafruit costs about 15 Euros. If you need prototyping features the price for the alternative solution is on par with the Raspibox Zero based solution. The Adafruit prototyping board has a some advantages though:
- More cabling terminals
- larger protying space
- prototyping area is not obscured by an overlaying board. I think this is the case with Raspibox Zero from what I can see on the photos
Note beyond that basic prototyping boards can already be optained for 5 Euros!
