Smarter Coffe an iKettle 2.0 plugin

As I just had the chance to get my hands on these two gadgets I would like to integrate them into pimatic.

There seems to be a plugin for the iKettle by @hongkongkiwi but I could not try it yet and it is also not shown in the plugins section.

I would like a plugin which would support all “smarter” devices (http://smarter.am)

I could not find a decent node library for communication yet.
There is one by @hongkongkiwi which he uses in in his plugin.(relatively basic and seems to be for the 1.0 version)

The most complete one is iBrew which is written in python

However the code doesn’t look to sophisticated…

The options I see:

1. Write a plugin which directly interfaces with the devices (don’t create a new node lib).
2. Write a plugin and a node lib which interfaces with the devices and use the lib in the plugin.
3. Write a plugin which interfaces with an iBrew server

What are your thoughts on this?

Does anybody also have the devices and would beta-test/be interested in the plugin.

hm … a plugin for the smarter coffee machine sounds great …
would be a purchase decision imho

A kettle with programmable temperatures, wow! Sounds like “Zen and the art of preparing cup of tea” Well, that’s too sophisticated for me, but probably the programmable coffee machine is something to look at.

Honestly, I think it would be really nice to support all these “smarter” devices, possibly basing on the stuff written by Andy (@hongkongkiwi). Unfortunately, Andy who started so many nice projects has not been around for a couple of months now.

Personally, I’d prefer option 2. The advantage is that the lib may also be used by other projects and this way you’ll eventually get feedback from other user & developer communities. I have done with node-milight-promise for example. In your case it is also advantageous because you presumably do not own all these devices to test with.

FYI node library is in the works.
@mwittig Basing some of it of you mentioned milight plugin.

However this might take a bit of time as I still have some problems wrapping my head around promises and how to best implement waiting for responses from the devices.

I just bought a smarter coffee machine and i am looking forward too the plugin.

Great puts some pressure on me, maybe I find some time to continue this weekend.

found some time, will push the first version of the node library to github tonight. From there creating a plugin should be very simple.

However I found that the connection to the devices is very unreliable and I am looking into ways to make it more robust from the lib side however I’m afraid that the problems are most likely rooted in the firmware of the devices.

@thex : I forgot my coffee machine for a long time. But now all other smart things work so well that I want to try again. Do you have yours still in operation?

Yes still around but not really integrated, however i have the bigger part of a js library already implemented. But we should first check if maybe there is some library already available now.

@joshua You may also want to have look at iBrew which provides a command line interface among other options. Another thing to trial is the Smarter Coffee terminal client.
